Requirements for Lessons

Instruments

All students are required to have an instrument, which needs to be in proper playing condition. A good instrument gives the player back what they “put into it” and makes learning easier and far more rewarding.

We provide sales and rentals of instruments.

Also note that violins come in various sizes and must be the correct size for the player.

Therefore, Rhiannon asks all students to please consult with her before buying a violin and bow. There are very specific things you should look for in an instrument and that are necessary for the development of a player. Rhiannon is happy to help you find the instrument that best suits your playing and budget.

Overall, for between $150-$500 (depending on your budget) Rhiannon will set you up with a student outfit which is better than other outfits in this price range and from other shops. Students moving into 4/4 or full size can expect to spend between $1000 to $1500 on a very nice used or new violin that will keep its value and which the player can get years of use.

Suggested and Required Accessories

Fiddleheads Violin Shop stocks everything students need for lessons.

Music Books & Sheet music: Required

Please visit my Books page to for my recommend titles. Note I provide printed sheet music for students to supplement their book music.

Rosin: Required

This block of purified tree sap is required to make the bow hairs to contact the strings properly.

Extra Set of Strings: Encouraged

Keep an extra set handy “just in case.”

Soft cotton cloth & Polish/Cleaner: Suggested

Keep your finish like new. Polish only once or twice a year.

Shoulder rest: Strongly Recommended

Hold the violin at the chin, leaving the left hand free to move without holding straining your neck. I recommend the Bon Musica. Its versatile design makes it comfortable and sturdy and promises a proper hold of the instrument.

Music Stand: Required

A music stand is a must for proper technique in home practice. Cheaper folding stands are good for small books but professional solid stands are far useful for advancing players with heavy books and binders.

Humidifier: Encouraged

Keep violins from drying out and developing cracks in Winter months

Tuning Fork: Encouraged

A440, useful for tuning by ear. A fun and handy tool.

Chromatic Tuner and Metronome: Required

The “Intelli IMT204” tuner and metronome combo is best.

Mute: Encouraged only when quiet practice is required

Soften the volume of your instrument for late-night practice.
